finally!  a new policy instated by the obama administration will not prosecute those who are using medical marijuana and following state laws.  isn’t this common sense?   as i posted before, the LA district attorney is going after legal marijuana dispensaries.  i truly hope that this new push from our current administration is a direct result of the idiocy displayed by LA’s lovely DA.

DRUGS?

just for giggles.

(although, did they need to include the fact that he was asian?)

this stuff, salvia, is available at local smoke shops.  cbsatlanta had a field day with it tonight and the DEA has listed it as a “drug of concern”.

salvia is a potent hallucinogen.  it causes dissociation, uncontrollable giggle fits, increased sweating, and other effects that seem to be similar to those of LSD.   florida, illinois, virginia,  missouri, kansas, delaware, mississippi, oklahoma, and north dakota have placed salvia, or salvia divinorum, into the schedule I class of drugs (along with codeine, heroin, acid, and marijuana).

the more i’m watching all of these videos uploaded on youtube, the more concerned i become.  to be quite honest, i’ve always been a bit scared of hallucinogens’ effects on the population.  how often have you been watching cops when some man on PCP is running around town naked?  enough.  my anxieties are about the schizophrenia-like states these drugs produce.  and in my opinion, the world has enough mentally ill people already.

at first, i was quite angry that legal alternatives were probably going to be knocked from the shelves.  but videos like this, hilarious as they are, kind of scare the shit out of me.  i’m apprehensive because the world doesn’t seem to think that life is very interesting.  drug abuse is up, and i’m starting to wonder if one of the big reasons is something called boredom.

what i know is that our categorization of drugs is a wee bit off.  drugs are listed in “schedules” by the DEA.  the way this agency has thrown drugs into categories is completely haphazard and befuddling.

drugs in schedule I are drugs considered to be those which pose a significant threat– “a high potential for abuse”.  so that’s LSD, codeine, heroin, acid, countless opiates, mescaline, morphine, and yes… marijuana.  drugs in schedule II: opium, oxycodone, methadone.  schedule III would be things like steroids.  and schedule IV?  klonopin, ativan, valium, and various other benzodiazepines, sedatives, and anticonvulsants.

the sedative for coughs!
the sedative for coughs!

there was a time when we didn’t know a lot about drugs.  but i’m pretty sure we know what certain drugs do at this point.  i’m not even talking about legalization here, i’m talking about rethinking our drug policies and listening to non-biased research.  the arena of conversation about drugs has not been progressive enough.  i understand parents’ fears.  but open debate on any issue is necessary, and i think it’s time everyone sits down and educates themselves on the effects of drugs.  on both sides.
