HOMECOMING QUEEN!

one of them transgendered folks at the college of william and mary has been made homecoming queen! or rather, gender-queer jessee vasold, who prefers to use gender neutral pronouns such as “ze” and “zir”.  the use of these pronouns makes things much easier for all involved.

i became perplexed with the use of proper pronouns (or worried about offending someone) when i worked at a “queer” bookstore, outwrite, in downtown atlanta in 2005.  there were two bathrooms, one men’s and one women’s.  folks would come up to the barista bar and ask me for the key.  i’m pretty good at identifying “gender”, but as most of you know it can be tricky and open to interpretation!  most of the time i would put the “male” and “female” key on the bar and allow the person to choose.  you’d think that a “forward thinking” hang-out would be a bit more progressive and take the male and female signs off the door!

nonetheless, i am so happy to know that this college has been moving forward.  this year they allowed the students to vote directly, rather than the winners being chosen by student government officers, as was done in previous years.  fuck yeah!

apple & “trans-misogyny”?
